      Entretien pour Corporate Counsel

J'ai postulé en ligne. Le processus a pris 4 semaines. J'ai passé un entretien chez Amazon (Londres, Angleterre)

      Entretien

I applied online through LinkedIn and received an invitation for a telephone interview with a peer from the legal team. We had a productive conversation and a week later I received an invitation for an interview day onsite. Prior to attending the interview, I had to complete a 'law school'-type scenario exercise together with a written questionnaire about my experience and outlining my motivations for applying to Amazon. They probably took around 4 hours to write and proofread. Then, I had another telephone interview with one of the US lawyers. I was taking the call from my office in London and Amazon Chime did not seem to be compatible with my work laptop - the effect of which was that the video didn't work, so we just spoke over the phone. He wasn't the friendliest person I've ever encountered. He asked a slightly abrupt and off-topic technical question - I made key points but it's true that I didn't answer it to the best of my ability. On the day of the onsite, I went over to Amazon's London office near Liverpool Street. It's a lovely office and I was made to feel very welcome. The people I met were much nicer and I had the opportunity to ask questions about the company and the role and I felt like I got a lot out of the day. Sadly I only met two people in person - everyone else was via Amazon Chime - and I felt like this was a shame. I didn't meet one single person from the hiring team in person, which made me feel that they perhaps weren't taking my application as seriously as they could have done. My main concern, however, was about the lack of diversity of the interviewers and I do think this reflects poorly on Amazon. All of the (5) attorneys were white men, but (significantly for me) they all had incredibly similar backgrounds - a few years in a big corporate law firm, followed by years at Amazon. No career changes, no time in a start-up... no maternity leave, no freelancing. It all seemed rather old-fashioned and closed-shop. My background is very slightly more colourful and (I think) that sits very well with the leadership principles. The questions on the day were largely based around the leadership principles. It's a good idea to think through past projects and the role that you played in them. There was a little cynicism from one interviewer in particular ("I'm sorry but I've been told to ask you this") and two of the interviewers asked me to answer quickly ("we only have 2 minutes to cover this question"). Unfortunately I didn't get the position - I asked for feedback but haven't received any. It was a fascinating insight into the world of Amazon. Certain interviewers were incredible and I'm so glad I had the opportunity. Apply if you're a corporate lawyer at a big US law firm - you will fit in! Good luck.

Applied for multiple roles and got referred, rejected without personal contact. Then was contacted by a recruiter for more general role of corporate counsel. Working with the recruiter was pleasant, but scheduling the second phone interview was a hassle, and the phone interview itself felt like a test of the Amazon interview skills rather than actual skills needed for the job. Did not feel a connection to the interviewer and was rejected in an auto email about a day later.

Lengthy process, a lot of time wasted. They make you believe that you are a suitable candidate and after a round of interviews, one written assessment, and a final 5 hour interview with 5 different attorneys they take more than two weeks to tell they cannot give you an offer and they cannot provide feedback.

      Entretien

I applied online for an Amazon Corporate Counsel role, and about two weeks later a recruiter reached out to schedule an initial phone screen. The recruiter asked general background questions about my experience, where I was admitted to practice, geographic preferences, and what type of legal work I was most interested in. Based on that conversation, they determined I would likely be a fit for the “generalist” corporate counsel pipeline rather than a specific posted role. I was then scheduled for an interview with a senior member of Amazon’s legal team who was not tied to any particular business unit or opening. Prior to the interview, I had to complete a writing exercise. The interview itself was fairly comprehensive. It included: * questions about my resume and prior experience; * why I was interested in Amazon; * substantive and hypothetical legal questions testing legal judgment and analysis; and * scenario-based behavioral questions. About two weeks later, I heard that I had passed that round and would move forward in the process. At that point, I was told they needed to match me with a specific team/business group before proceeding further. After that, communication became less consistent. I followed up a few times over the following months. Initially, recruiting responded that they were still trying to identify the right team fit and asked me to be patient. Eventually, though, the responses stopped and I never ended up being matched with a team or advancing further in the process. Interview wasn’t “difficult”, just a lot of prep, without actual possibility of there being a match.
