There is no explicit path to promotion. One day you are all of a sudden approached as a candidate for management. If you keep your nose clean, you are a candidate for a "great new job" with no training in how to be a manager. Like every role at Amazon, one is left to sink or swim and of course the danger of sinking as a manager is that you are taking your direct reports with you.
