      Entretien pour Front End Developer

      Employé (anonyme)

      Offre acceptée

      Candidature

J'ai postulé via une agence de recrutement. J'ai passé un entretien chez iwoca (Londres, Angleterre)

      Entretien

Chat from the recruiter Introduction to the role and the company. Take-home test Simple take-home test to build a user interface that contained 2 loan products (or calculators). I appreciated the patience from the team as I took a relatively long to submit the test due to my busy workload at the time. Chat with HR Great chat, answered all of my questions no matter how silly and dumb. I got a great understanding of the workplace, culture, benefits, and processes. Pair programming session One of the nicest pair programming sessions I've had. I was asked questions based on my take-home test. The tech choices I made, technical questions. I was asked to build new features and extend some functionality. I received proper explanations whenever I mentioned I did not know the answer to a particular question. I learned a few things. Tech discussion This was more like a systems design task on how to build an image-sharing platform. It felt deliberately vague, to encourage questions. I really enjoyed this exercise. Chat with the director I had a really nice chat with the director about tech in general and the front end.

Didn’t even have an intro call, straight away asked to do a technical submission. Straight away I saw the assessment hadn’t received any real changes for many years, which didn’t fill me with confidence. Their hiring practices don’t seem to be very modern. The assessment has very vague requirements, which is fine, but the feedback given is equally vague, just a short list of bullet points. It seems like they expect a gold plated app with error handling, full test coverage, and mobile responsiveness within a strict 2 hour time limit. In my view this is rather unrealistic and expectations should be adjusted given the time allowed. At the end you’re given a score out of 100. I have no idea how or what this is scored against since no information related to this was provided.

Thank you for the effort and time you invested in our process. Apologies that the outcome and experience were not positive for you. I appreciate it is not common practice to invite candidates to invest time in a task before speaking with a person. We try to signpost our process clearly upfront, and your comment is a useful reminder that we may need to do more. Starting with a technical exercise reduces bias at the earliest stage: candidates are assigned a codename and reviewers see the submission only. The brief is intentionally open, and the two-hour limit is designed to create a consistent and fair test for all candidates. More on what we do to reduce bias is here: https://coda.io/@iwocauk/interview-welcome-pack-tap/reducing-bias-9 We do not expect perfection. We look at the decisions candidates make, the trade-offs, and how they structure their code without being guided. These are assessed through an objective scorecard that is updated regularly. We do not share the detailed scoring criteria, as publishing this would compromise the fairness of the task. Markers are guided to provide feedback that is clear, actionable, and reasonable, with the aim of giving candidates useful context for future interviews. We also invite candidates to ask any questions and/or discuss any questions on a call. If you want to talk through any part of your experience, you can reach out to your recruiter or contact me directly at d.stewart@iwoca.co.uk

First they sent me a task that was timed (2 hours) and they seemed very strict about it. Secondly, I haven't even spoken to anyone from the company. No intro calls etc, just straight into the take home task. I submitted my task and never heard back from them. I understand they are busy (who isn't?) but it is very disrespectful to leave people hanging like this.

Thank you very much for sharing your comments! We take pride in our culture of giving clear, reasonable and actionable feedback, so this is very disappointing to learn about your negative experience. We've been through all the submitted tasks, and from our records, it seems every frontend developer candidate has received feedback within the target time-frame. Please can you share more info so we can look into this? Mail to talent@iwoca.co.uk, and we'll get back to you ASAP. Thanks for your interest in iwoca, and your effort in our process. - The Talent Team
