Thank you for the effort and time you invested in our process. Apologies that the outcome and experience were not positive for you.
I appreciate it is not common practice to invite candidates to invest time in a task before speaking with a person. We try to signpost our process clearly upfront, and your comment is a useful reminder that we may need to do more.
Starting with a technical exercise reduces bias at the earliest stage: candidates are assigned a codename and reviewers see the submission only. The brief is intentionally open, and the two-hour limit is designed to create a consistent and fair test for all candidates. More on what we do to reduce bias is here: https://coda.io/@iwocauk/interview-welcome-pack-tap/reducing-bias-9
We do not expect perfection. We look at the decisions candidates make, the trade-offs, and how they structure their code without being guided. These are assessed through an objective scorecard that is updated regularly.
We do not share the detailed scoring criteria, as publishing this would compromise the fairness of the task. Markers are guided to provide feedback that is clear, actionable, and reasonable, with the aim of giving candidates useful context for future interviews.
We also invite candidates to ask any questions and/or discuss any questions on a call.
If you want to talk through any part of your experience, you can reach out to your recruiter or contact me directly at d.stewart@iwoca.co.uk
