The interview process took three steps: with HR, with hiring manager, and panel interview with a presentation and four 1 on 1 sessions. The last two steps contain mostly technical questions related to the job responsibilities.

Question 1
One of the 1 on 1 session I was asked for a reverse interview.

I had a phone screening where the asked me my salary requirements which I wasn't expecting. I tried to dodge by saying it depends on the total compensation package, but they persisted so I threw out a reasonable number.
I had a phone interview with the hiring manager. He told me about the company, and I was able to ask some questions about the company. The questions directed at me were mostly about my background and interests.
I was then invited for an on-site interview which consisted of me meeting with approximately 6 people at various levels within the company, and a 1 hour technical presentation on my research. In the 1-on-1 interviews, mostly I was asking the questions, though they asked a few.
Good attendance/questions during my presentation from people on the team I would be working on. My research is not super related to the work the company does, though my coursework and professional interests are more closely related. The hiring manager kept asking questions like "Is the industry your research was in not hiring at the moment?" "Are you sure you would want to live in Houston?" etc.
At the end of the interview, they told me that they hadn't made a decision, but did want to interview other candidates, but I would be informed if the position was filled.
One thing rubbed me the wrong way. Before the interview, I was told I would receive reimbursement for my driving expenses (I drove 6 hours round trip). Now, about 2 months later my requests for an update on the hiring process are ignored, and I've never received reimbursement for my travel expenses despite asking for a follow-up on that as well. Not a huge expense, but I'm surprised a company would not honor their word.
