Rollins continues our recognition of Black History Month by featuring Black Greek Letter Organizations, also known as the “Divine Nine” sororities and fraternities, and our fellow team members who are a part of them. The Divine Nine were founded throughout the early- to mid-1900s and now make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Each of the nine organizations developed during a time when racism was widespread on predominantly white college campuses and African Americans throughout the country were denied essential rights and privileges. Thus, a need was created for African Americans to align themselves with those who share common interests, goals and values. The nine organizations were created from that need, fostering sisterhood and brotherhood to generate social change. Today, the Divine Nine remain committed to the African American community, advocating for racial justice and participating in various philanthropic efforts, including voter rights activism. Members continue to grow as changemakers, dedicated to service, empowerment and fellowship. We are grateful to have members of the Divine Nine contribute to the growth of Rollins and the community at large.

This Black History Month, we are spotlighting people, organizations and social affiliations that have played a significant role in shaping African American history and culture at Rollins and beyond. This week, we turn our focus to Rollins Broadcasting, Inc. In 1948, O. Wayne Rollins and his brother, John W. Rollins, founded Rollins Broadcasting, Inc. Their most notable success was with Black audiences, with 19 million Black consumers in the early 60s. The radio stations showcased talent, offered diverse programs, and became gathering places for the African American community. Recognizing an opportunity to market to and employ Black individuals, Rollins made many other investments during a time when urban populations were often overlooked. For a comprehensive exploration of Rollins’ impact on African American culture, purchase “The Art of Change – The Story of Rollins, Inc.” here: https://lnkd.in/exA7M8S5
