For World Autism Acceptance Day on April 2, Merakey Autism Center Hampden held a Light It Up Blue celebration. The students participated in an autism awareness scavenger hunt, then everyone enjoyed a party full of blue snacks, music, and fun!
This summer, Merakey’s Adult Behavioral Health Services in partnership with the Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disabilities Services, the First Judicial District, and the City of Philadelphia will operate the city’s new Court Evaluation Clinic. This innovative clinic will deliver essential services, including competency evaluations, treatment assessments, and aid in sentencing evaluations, to help streamline the judicial process and ensure residents of Philadelphia receive timely, appropriate care. Together, we will expand access to high quality behavioral health services and support fair, efficient outcomes for all Philadelphians. Merakey looks forward to serving the City of Philadelphia through this vital new resource.
We’re proud to recognize Merakey team members who continue to grow their skills through National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) certifications. This month, 89 colleagues completed the DSP Certification and 21 earned the Front-Line Supervisor Certification — a reflection of their commitment to professional development and high-quality, person-centered care. Our IDD Philadelphia team recently celebrated these achievements with a recognition luncheon, honoring the dedication and impact our certified professionals bring to the communities we serve every day.
This year, we’re proud to celebrate Pattie Tress’ 40-year anniversary at Merakey, a powerful example of internal growth and long-term career development. Pattie began her journey at our Pittsburgh Campus and has grown through a wide range of roles, including Direct Care Staff, Behavior Specialist, House Manager, Program Instructor, Waiver Medical Clerk, and now Medical Clerk supporting our Allegheny/Beaver ICF homes. Her willingness to learn, adapt, and step up wherever needed reflects the kind of dedication and flexibility we value at Merakey. Pattie’s career is a reminder that meaningful work here can evolve over time, creating opportunities to grow, contribute, and make a lasting impact. We’re grateful for her 40 years of commitment and excellence!
Team Merakey proudly participated in the Autism Speaks Greater Philadelphia Empower Walk & 5K Run on November 2. This inspiring event brought together families, advocates, and organizations to promote inclusion and raise awareness for autism.
Last week, Merakey AVS proudly celebrated the 50th anniversary of The Terrible Towel® with festivities held across multiple western PA program centers, campuses, and homes. Hundreds of individuals and staff came together for tailgate-themed parties filled with music, games, and plenty of black and gold spirit! Many fired up their grills, decorated their cars and spaces, and enjoyed a fun-filled day honoring a true Pittsburgh tradition. For the past 29 years, proceeds from officially licensed Terrible Towel® products have directly benefited the individuals supported by Merakey AVS in western PA. These funds help cover costs such as equipment, program development, and facility renovations. Since 1996, Merakey AVS has received nearly $10 million through this incredible partnership!
We are honored to be awarded $2 million in supplemental funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to launch a pilot program expanding Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) services to Kensington—one of the Philadelphia neighborhoods most impacted by homelessness and addiction. We’re building a mission-driven team focused on connecting individuals to recovery and stability through evidence-based care and street-level engagement.
