What does it take to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals? For Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City and St. Vincent Regional Hospital in Billings, it starts with mentorship, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of heart. This summer, more than 40 high school students from across Montana stepped into the world of medicine through the MedStart program, a week-long camp that offers immersive experiences in radiology, nursing, EMT services, and more. From mock codes to echocardiograms, students didn’t just observe—they engaged, learned, and even signed up to volunteer. With support from the Montana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and local hospital foundations, MedStart is opening doors for students from diverse backgrounds and shaping the future of care in Montana. Read how these hospitals are turning curiosity into careers.

At Intermountain Health, we believe in what we do. As caregivers, no matter our role or where we work, we make a difference in the lives of our patients, their families, and our communities. Your passion and compassion don't go unnoticed. Inspired by Rob Allen, president and CEO, we recently asked caregivers to share the ‘why’ behind their career in healthcare. Their inspiring answers are a reminder of the impact we have on the people around us, whether we’re helping a patient for an hour or working with a colleague for years.

The towering cliffs and golden sunrises of Colorado National Monument have long inspired awe—but few capture its magic like Monica Esposito. Now the Monument’s first-ever Community Artist in Park, Monica blends compassion and creativity in every brushstroke. When she isn’t putting brush to canvas, Monica is taking care of some of the smallest new lives to enter the Grand Junction community as a NICU RN at St. Mary's Regional Hospital. She found that the schedule from nursing shifts gave her time to paint while she also found working with patients — especially premature babies and their families — rewarding. “It’s been a very big and important part of my life,” Monica said. “I really see that there is a good balance between being a painter and having this worthwhile pursuit of art in my time off from the hospital and then also having a very rewarding job taking care of sick or premature newborns.”
