Team Member Spotlight: Dr. Mike Malek-Ahmadi, Senior Bioinformatics Scientist for Banner Alzheimer’s Institute in Phoenix, AZ. It’s not every day you meet a scientist who professionally released a rock album while in high school. Before Dr. Mike Malek-Ahmadi became a senior bioinformatics scientist for Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, he played drums in the band Tomorrow’s Yesterday. He and his bandmates won a Battle of the Bands competition in Texas that led to recording an album that came out during his senior year. Now Dr. Malek-Ahmadi works as a statistician in the Computational and Image Analysis Lab, collaborating on projects with renowned researchers and clinicians from different areas and specialties at Banner and across the globe. “It reinforces the idea that solving big problems like Alzheimer’s disease takes a team effort that extends beyond the walls of your own workplace,” he says. Dr. Malek-Ahmadi analyzes a variety of clinical, neuroimaging and neuropathological data from research studies. He’s also an independent investigator who focuses on determining whether certain vascular factors are involved in Alzheimer’s disease. The National Institute on Aging awarded his first grant for this work last year. His career began at the University of Arizona’s Department of Neurology as a psychometrist, administering and scoring cognitive tests for clinical trials and observational studies.

Team Member Spotlight: Michele Gutierrez, Clinical Research Program Manager at Banner Sun Health Research Institute, Sun City, AZ. At age 20, Michele Gutierrez had no idea when she met Muhammad Ali that she’d one day help the world better understand Parkinson’s disease, which impacted the legendary boxer. Now she’s a clinical research program manager at Banner Sun Health Research Institute, where Michele helps coordinate and conduct clinical research trials for medications not yet approved by the FDA. Most of the trials focus on Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s. She helps to find new participants to sign up for trials and works with them throughout the studies, which are crucial to better understanding, preventing and treating the diseases. “There have been a lot of great moments over my 21-year-career,” Michele says. “My most favorite moments are when research participants give me the biggest hug and thank me for helping them.” She’s proud to have been involved in research that recently led to FDA approval of lecanemab to treat Alzheimer’s. “I feel like in research I’m constantly learning and evolving,” she says. “Every time there is a new study, it is almost like starting a new job.”
