National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the contributions that Latino and Hispanic Americans have made to the United States. It is a time to reflect on the importance of Hispanic culture. It’s also a time to celebrate and grow together while supporting our Hispanic friends and colleagues. Hispanic Heritage Week began in 1968 in the United States, when President Lyndon Johnson signed Hispanic Heritage Week into law. Meet Virginia, Clinical Coordinator for Carolinas Rehabilitation Pediatric Therapy University Huntersville and Wendover. Her career path originally began in public relations and advertising at Appalachian State University, but after taking introductory speech pathology classes, Virginia uncovered her true calling and pursued a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Her interest in the Atrium Health Charlotte Institute of Rehabilitation sparked after her grandmother was a patient at the facility. She held an internship during her final year of graduate school working with adults and pediatric patients. "It was during my internship that I knew I found my place in health care," she recalls. "My grandmother’s care at the Charlotte Institute of Rehabilitation opened my eyes to the meaningful work being done." Now, in her 19th year as a teammate, Virginia is a clinical manager for Atrium Health’s multidisciplinary feeding team at Levine Children’s Feeding Center. Despite her managerial responsibilities, Virginia remains deeply involved in patient care, especially in pediatric feeding and swallowing. "There's nothing like seeing a patient eat by mouth for the first time or helping them get off tube feedings. It’s about more than just therapy, it’s about giving kids and their families hope and joy," she says. Virginia credits her growth to the strong support system at Atrium Health, highlighting the career ladder, mentorship opportunities and continuing education.
