Diversity and inclusion are not just ideals for Carnell Jermaine Hampton, PhD. FAAPM, Assistant Vice President of Medical Physics at Atrium Health, they are fundamental principles that drive his work and vision for the organization. "Innovating with an eye towards investment in creative models to overcome disparities ultimately makes Atrium Health a best place for care," he says. Dr. Hampton's commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment is evident in Atrium Health's ongoing efforts to recruit and empower diverse talent, starting with high school education and workforce training. Black History Month holds personal and professional significance for Dr. Hampton, serving as a reminder of the rich contributions of Black Americans to the fabric of American society. He envisions a future where the celebration of Black history transcends a single month, becoming an integral part of the nation's collective narrative year-round. “We’ve hopefully finally come to an understanding that explorations of Black history are not just an activity for February, but a 365-day pursuit," he says. Ginger's journey from a teacher assistant and bus driver to a dedicated nurse at Atrium Health is nothing short of inspirational. Around six or seven years ago, her life took a significant turn when both of her parents were hospitalized simultaneously. It was during this challenging time that Ginger found her calling to become a nurse. Throughout her parents' hospitalization, Ginger found herself drawn to the compassionate care provided by the nurses. They recognized her natural inclination towards nursing and encouraged her to pursue it further. "They told me I had a knack for nursing," she said. With their words echoing in her mind, Ginger made the decision to return to school and pursue her nursing degree. Choosing Atrium Health as her workplace was a decision filled with personal significance. Not only was her baby born there, but her husband was also hospitalized at Atrium Health. "My husband had health issues and spent time at Atrium Health, he was a patient in the same unit I did my preceptorship in," she said. She saw firsthand the impact of quality care and felt compelled to give back to the community that had supported her family during challenging times. Click to continue reading Ginger's story.
