      The interview itself was great - they sent me the questions in advance so that I could prepare my answers. After being offered a position, the confirmation of the offer was slightly disorganised. I was sent onboarding information, calendar invites for my first day, a list of courses to complete before my start date, but no service agreement. I was asked to complete 4 courses on Shopify before my first day. I was told that they are essential to doing the role successfully. When asked if I were to be compensated for time spent on these courses, I was informed that they were unpaid. I declined the offer as I do not want to work for an employer that condones this behaviour. Unpaid labour, regardless of if it is 5 minutes or 5 hours, is not acceptable. To expect this of any staff or new hire, especially in the currently economic climate, is unacceptable. It is unfortunate, as I think their product and their model is great. However, this business practice put a bad taste in my mouth. Hopefully they change their mind in the future.

      1. What do you think will be the next innovation in the world of e-commerce? 2. In your opinion, what are some of the challenges faced by small retailers today? 3. Can you tell me about a situation with a customer when there wasn’t a clear policy to use, and you needed to make a judgment call? How did you approach your decision, and what happened? 4. Whilst working, you notice a sudden increase in urgent emails, chat messages and calls from merchants reporting that their customers are not able to place orders through the app. How would you handle this situation and what steps would you take?

The Shopify courses are a required standard that we need all team members to have completed before joining the business, something we discussed in the interview. We do state in the job description that awareness and education in the Shopify platform is essential, this is the measure that ensures everyone that joins our team has an equal baseline knowledge set. Unpaid labour is not something we condone in any way shape or form. We 100% ensure, especially in hourly contracted roles, if your are on Zapiet time you’re on paid time. As mentioned above, these three courses are requirements for the role, something that we would normally ‘need’ for the role, but something that in this case you were missing. We were willing to overlook this missing element given your incredible personality and value that we know you would bring to the team, on the condition that you were able to level up to match the other candidates before your were to join the business.
