      Entretien pour Software Engineering Manager

      Candidature

J'ai postulé en ligne. Le processus a pris 3 semaines. J'ai passé un entretien chez WebstaurantStore (Tampa, FL) en juin 2020

      Entretien

I originally applied for a Senior .NET Engineer position since I have over 15 years of professional .NET development experience. They wanted to interview me for an unadvertised manager position instead. First phone interview was about 45 minutes where I was told that I probably couldn't pass the developer test and the manager role might better suite my experience. Second interview was an hour and forty-five minutes long with two hiring managers; one from Tampa and one from PA. They spent at least 25 minutes asking the same question in different ways. They wanted to know if I would fire a developer that wasn't performing well within the first 60 days without hesitation. They were seriously focused on the need to fire people and having managers willing to do it. It seemed that they had no concern for trying to work with people and help them improve; just fire them quickly. They made it clear that they have so many applicants for developer positions that they don't need to try and keep developers they don't want. The conversation eventually turned to my experience and technical capabilities. A discussion on SOLID principles ensued towards the end of the interview. Apparently if you cannot regurgitate the definition for each principle verbatim, you're not qualified to work there. Rather than discuss how I would write code that follows SOLID principles, they were more tied up in the acronym itself and each definition. Then the Tampa guy asked an off the wall question about T-SQL that he said half of his team couldn't answer but expected me to have the answer. A week or so later they emailed me letting me know they weren't interested any longer. I ultimately ended up accepting a Lead .NET Developer role at a larger company that actually had me take a fairly involved coding challenge that I passed with flying colors. I showed them SOLID principles in action instead of just needing to regurgitate verbatim definitions. My starting salary as a developer is considerably higher than WebstaurantStore's salary for a manager role. So happy I did not get a job offer here.
