The interview process is quite straightforward for this industry – a phone interview first, followed by a working interview. The phone interview was quite pleasant, I spoke with the manager for about 30 minutes and was immediately requested to come in for an in-person shadowing opportunity. The working interview was typical as well. I was asked to shadow one of the current technicians – unfortunately I found her quite dismissive and flippant; simple questions like "where can I find a thermometer for a TPR?" were met with a huff and an eyeroll. I ultimately ended up shadowing (and assisting) a different technician that was much more engaging and helpful. I received an offer from VEG but found it relatively low for the area and for my experience level. I counteroffered with room for negotiation and never received a response. I sent a follow up with a request for update on negotiations on compensation, and the question was all-together ignored. It's unfortunate that in veterinary medicine, we're taught not to advocate for ourselves, but it seems fairly unprofessional to completely ignore an email requesting salary negotiation. I would have been understanding if I received something stating that the pay I was asking for was not possible, however this is Silicon Valley, CA. We negotiate salaries here.
