Hiring is straight forward. Contact your local Navy recruiter. Listen with an open mind, but remember he is paid to put people into certain occupations based on what the Navy needs. If you are interested in becoming a rescue swimmer, make sure to push for it. You will have to sign extra paperwork that volunteers you for flight duty, and more ominously, that your own life will not be a primary consideration during rescue. Start running in sand if you can, and swim as much as possible. When you arrive at Boot Camp, do what you can to stay in shape. At some point you will have to do an "in test". The requirements are available online, make sure you're able to do far more than minimum, or you will hate SAR school. If you do not pass the in test it could be years before you get another opportunity.
After Boot there will be NACCS or Naval Aircrew Candidate School. Do your PT, keep up to speed. You STILL have to keep up standards for RSS (rescue swimmer school) pass NACCS and DO NOT DOR (Drop On Request) no matter what. It isn't uncommon for less than 30% to make it through school. Afterward you will go through AW A school and SERE. SERE sucks but you will learn a lot about yourself. Do not ask anyone about it, it's different for everyone, and it's secret. If they do tell you anything it will only hurt you at the school and heaven forbid in real life evasion.
