tl/dr - seems like a great organization, but interview process a little silly and doesn't match job description. First I should point out that everyone I talked to was gracious, professional, and seemed top rate. The recruiter in particular was outstanding and kind (even when I was venting my frustration at the follow up call). I was pretty excited about this one after taking a look at their products and organization, so I put in extra effort to prepare. The job description described the position's 'core responsibilities' as: - Become an expert on Stripe’s APIs and how to best deploy them. - Help Stripe customers integrate with our APIs and products. - Own and drive relationships with external technical audiences - Be the technical relationship owner and subject-matter expert with the customer - Educate customer technical teams on Stripe products. With these responsibilities in mind, I was under the impression that the job required a deep knowledge of their products/API's. So in preparation I: - Read through their complete set of documentation - Walked through/tried all of their requests from the payment and billing API using both Python and Java. ( I found a quirk in their list subscription items functionality in Python) - spent time understanding/trying out error responses, idempotency, metadata. - used a dummy webhook endpoint to capture events and take a look at them as I was working through the UI. - built a mini project with a web front end that hit against my sample Stripe account using the API. I brought my laptop to show what I had learned up to that point. I completely wasted my time. No one at any point in the interview process had any interest in what I knew. There was a role playing session that I thought was a little silly, another session that went over some customer situational hypotheticals, a high level SQL session, a presentation session and a talk with the hiring manager. For the most part I enjoyed the day, but it didn't seem to match what I thought the interview process would be for a technical role. The feedback I received ("not enough client facing experience") was a little insulting. I have more than a decade of customer facing experience as a technical consultant, trainer, escalation manager, technical account manager, and product manager.

I will echo the thoughts of a previous interviewee for the same role... Applied for the role, and my CV was screened by AI - I then arranged a video call with a recruiter based in India. The guy knew nothing about me, didn't really answer my questions well about the role and the company. What is the point in screening my CV if the recruiter isn't even going to look at it? To be honest, it just felt like another generic unnecessary and impersonal screening. Just wasted my time and his. I probably got rejected as I had no official experience as a TAM, even though I've spent most of my 15 year career in a technical role with a strong client facing side to it. But I don't think this guy was intelligent enough to understand this, nor did he care. Really poor from a company like Stripe to be honest.

The interview process was chaotic. The recruiter I worked with was all over the place with the information he gave. I was told that the interview process takes about a month, but it took over two months.

The Technical Recruiter I worked with at Stripe, Erica, is by far the best I have worked with - I realize that is not saying much as so many of them are awful, but she is very good at her job. I met with the Tech Recruiter first, she was good and thorough about what to expect with the process. Next was a take home assignment, it took a lot of time as I have never worked directly with a Stripe integration. Next was a meeting with a TAM to discuss the assignment, this was really good, the TAM I met with, Zack was super informative and nice. The next part was the rough part, there is an NDA so I cannot go into too much detail there were three parts - 1. Meeting with a hiring manager, this was good in my experience, 2. A repeat of the take home assignment more or less - this was not as positive for me, it seemed redundant and the interviewer was meh, 3. A role play exercise, this part was just not for me, it felt very unnatural, I am a non-performative person who tends to manage professional relationships through delivering results, so this was not the best setting for me to showcase my abilities. Oh well, it was just not a fit. I feel like a candidate who has kind of sales personality or background paired with experience working with Stripe integrations in the past would laser through their process.
