Submitted resume online and was contacted by HR within a couple of days for an in person interview. Met with local sales manager and regional sales manager who really seemed to enjoy patting each other on the back about their past sales accomplishments. Interview questions were pretty basic and seemed to focus on how well your personality would match with doing door to door sales. According to the sales managers, success in the position requires working a minimum of 6 days per week (including every Saturday & Sunday) from 10am until dark. They even suggested that working 7 days per week is what it takes to earn the "big money" and move into a management position.

I came across the position on a popular job board, and I sent in my resume. I was contacted by the national recruiter via email and asked when I would be available for a phone interview. I gave her the times that would work, and I did not hear back from her until the day she wanted to do the interview. On the day of the interview, I got the following email: "I am going to call you now, please call me at XXX-XXX-XXXX." I was confused on whether I was supposed to call or if she was going to call. Fortunately, I had another appointment that was getting ready to start, and I told her that I could do a call approximately 45 minutes later. her response was: "10 works great. I will call you, what is the best number?" I gave her my number, did my other appointment, and then waited for the call. At 10:24, I got the promised call. Not too impressive in my book. I mentioned that I was talking to my advisor at school when she called. She seemed immediately concerned because this position was, as she described a "10am until past dark" position, weekends required, and your day off was to be Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. The schedule is dictated, it seems, but, I was also told this was a 1099 position that was full commission. That sent red flags up. I would need to provide my own equipment for getting on roofs to inspect, my own vehicle, and, though this is not stated, as a 1099 position, my own liability insurnace in case I got hurt on the job. Because the sales team is smaller, there are proprietary territories and the company has a great reputation so it should be a pretty easyt sell. Those who are better at the job make between 90-120k/year. These were small benefits compared to the risks that I would have as a 1099 contractor. It may be a good position for some, but not for me. I told her this, and cut the interview off before an offer could have been extended.
