Upon the initial HR screening, I was asked to take an online assessment, which I passed with flying colors. Then, the first round of interviews was scheduled for a week later. Between that time, the HR called me and said that my salary ask is out of budget.
If that was the case, why did they waste my time with the online assessment?

Recruiter screen asking general questions about my experience. Would be followed by a technical screen and talking about the company, then coding test which was super-duper easy, the test was for entry level, not for a senior level, then I got email saying "we have decided to move forward with other candidates whose qualifications are better suited for the role". Actually they don't even have an interview to evaluate an engineer, so I don't know how they could decide what engineer is more qualified than another, any developer with any level whether junior or senior would pass that coding test, so I don't know how this test can be used to evaluate engineers.
