I was contacted by a recruiter on the phone who was trying to get me to set up an interview with his branch. I had been contacted via email previously because of my public resume on Monster.com, and I had replied asking to be taken off their recruiting list. This recruiter obviously did not care about my preferences. When I kindly told him I was not interested in pursuing a career in insurance, he told me I may never find another job anywhere and started criticizing my previous experience. He was so abrupt, unrelenting, and aggressive in his critique that I had to raise my voice above his to wish him a good day and hang up. I was quite caught off guard by his harshness, and I no one I know has ever called me a soft person.
Shortly after this phone call, I related the experience to my friends and family, informing them never to purchase insurance from American Life. I know that this experience has ensured that I will never purchase insurance from them myself, and I would rather go without insurance that give my money to a company that instructs its recruiters to verbally attack potential employees in hopes of coercing them into an interview.
