I am a PhD from a local university in Boston. I emailed the professor whose research area I am interested in. Meanwhile, I sent a hard copy of my CV and cover letter to his office. After about 1 week, I got the email reply to have onsite interview with his lab.

Entretien
Internet application required CV and cover letter. Phone interview, on site interview including seminar before receiving an offer. During the phone interview I received general background research questions from 3 people and more sitting in the background. On site interview included 1:1 with 7 professors/researchers and a 1 hour seminar.

Entretien
It was a great experience. I gave a presentation for the whole group. They asked technical questions related to my work and presentation. They also asked specifically about my papers and patents.
I applied for an advertized position and was short listed. I was interviewed on Skype as I was in Europe during that time. After the interview, email confirming my acceptance came and work permit documents were soon dispatached within 2 weeks. It took 1 month after administrative processing at US embassy for J1 visa
