      Entretien

Had an initial phone screen with HR. Then a phone call with the hiring manager. Then an onsite interview. I was interviewed by three people. The second person didn't seem very prepared for the interview and did not have any questions prepared for me. I enjoyed talking with the other two interviewers as they seemed enthusiastic about what they were doing (job/being at the company/wanting to hire an intern/etc).

I met a recruiter at my school's career fair. She forwarded my resume on to hiring managers and I was contacted the next month to set up a phone interview. The first interview was fairly casual, just going over my resume and making sure I could communicate. I had a second interview the following week with a different interviewer, and the questions were a bit more technical. A couple weeks later I received a verbal offer. Official offer letter followed.

When speaking to the recruiter at a job fair, I was told that I hadn't done enough engineering classes, even though they stated they would recruit sophomores. The recruiter was rude at first, asking me briskly for my resume and not introducing herself or shaking my hand. She proceeded to talk down to me, saying how I wasn't trying hard enough classes and assuming I wasn't motivated to do extra lab work or learn more about the field. I was also told that I need to do hard classes early on and senior year to make sure I wasn't struggling to graduate. For context, I could graduate in 3 years if it wasn't for the sequential nature of engineering courses; I will not be struggling to get the required number of credits. Additionally, she hadn't even looked at my resume, just looked at my graduation date and assumed I hadn't done anything engineering-related before. I was basically given career advice and not taken seriously about my interest in the company. When I asked about internships, she basically told me I wasn't qualified because I'm a sophomore without even looking at my resume, where she could have seen that I have worked on engineering projects more advanced than "rolling a marble down a hallway to determine its speed" (an actual example she gave when saying they wanted more experienced interns). I am at a very high level institution. While I may not be the craziest person there with the most elaborate course schedule here, this does not mean I do not push myself or that I will automatically not be qualified because I am not a senior. She might have been right - I may not be qualified at this point in time - but talking down to someone at a job fair is not a good way of recruitment. I was highly interested in this company on paper, but I will not apply for internships this year or any other year of my university career, nor am I likely to want to work here in the future. Warning, college students: beware the condescending recruiters!

      Question 1

"You should make sure you take hard classes and get involved in lab work. You seem like you have an idea of where you want to be. But good luck at our company, where we won't take you seriously." (not exact words)

We are sorry that you had a negative experience with our representative. Although we try to give each person quality time at job fairs, we are limited in the attention we can dedicate to each individual since so many people attend and we often have lines of people waiting to talk with us. It is true that only a small percentage of our interns are underclassmen, but when they approach us we try to take a brief moment to give them advice and guidance about what classes they should take and the kinds of projects they should get involved with to position them for future roles in our company. We usually get good feedback from this practice and often have students come back a year later who have taken that advice, and as a result have had experiences that prepare them well for their internship at Intuitive Surgical. In this case our advice clearly did not come off in the way it was intended and we’re sorry it created an impression that you were talked down to. We truly enjoy and value our interaction with university students, both at campus events and with our interns each summer.
