I applied online. About a week later I was called to set up an interview. His exact words were, "I see you applied for the Donut Fryer position. The hours for that are 9 pm to 5 am. Are you still interested in the position?" I said yes and a time was set up for the next day. I arrived at the interview and the first thing that the interviewer said was that the donut fryer position was no longer available, even though he had called me less than 24 hours before (my interview was at 10:30 a.m. and he'd called me the previous afternoon) and told me the hours for it and asked me if I was still interested. So either he hired someone between the time he called me and my interview and didn't bother to interview the other people who applied for that position that he'd set up interviews with )or notify them that that position was no longer available) or he knew the position wasn't available when he called me and baited and switched me. He then said that they had two other overnight positions available...stocking the shelves or custodian. I really was not interested in either position, but decided to go through with the interview just for the practice as it's always good to get interview practice. I was, however, very irritated at the circumstances. The interview questions were your basic easy interview questions anyone with a pulse could probably answer acceptably. I was immediately offered the shelf stocking job as that was the one I said I'd be more interested in (since I had to choose) and the interviewer seemed VERY in a hurry to hire me and get the process rolling, probably because they're desperate for workers. He immediately wanted me to do a drug test on site, fill out paperwork, etc. I asked if I could have some time to consider the offer and he seemed surprised and said of course and gave me his business card. I guess he's not used to someone like me that's not homeless or starving and desperate that doesn't need to snatch at crumbs when it's offered. If I were to have taken this job I would have been working for $1 less an hour than my previous job and for fewer hours as their part time limit was 24 hours where at my previous job it was 33 and I was consistently getting 30-32 hours a week. It just wasn't worth it, especially since my previous job also partly involved stocking shelves and I wanted to do something different that took more skill and I had previous experience in a commercial bakery and had enjoyed it. Even if I had been given the maximum 24 hours a week, which I was by no means guaranteed, my weekly paycheck would have been less than $240 after taking out deductions. It would take me at least a week and a half of work there IF I were getting the maximum 24 hours just to make my car payment. I was very upset that I was either baited and switched or that he didn't bother to call me after hiring someone else before my interview to see if I'd even be interested in the other two positions which would have saved me from wasting my time and the gas to get to the interview. His attitude seemed to be that people should be happy with any old position in the store they had open, like "Oh, the nice donut fryer position is no longer open, but we have a job busting your butt hauling 50 pound bags of dog food or cleaning public toilets! Those are just as good, a job's a job, am I right?" Ridiculous.
