This interview was *extremely* intense, took more than 2 months, included almost 6 full hours of video conferencing, 2 e-mail essays, and an extremely detailed application form, focused on offering feedback on the company's existing assets. It ultimately ended when I was told that the position to which I applied no longer exists. Worse, numerous other people privately reported a similar experience to me, namely: a long hiring process, during which *ACTUAL WORK* was solicited and submitted by the candidate, only to result in the position suddenly vanishing. The initial application form asks you to write several essays. It includes questions like "Tell us about a favorite project you've worked on. What made it your favorite?" which are usually reserved for later interviews. They also require references (including email addresses) as part of this initial form, a full address, and more. After this initial application, I got contacted by a hiring manager, requesting that I answer SIX additional questions and tasks, including asking me to complete the Holochain install tutorial and provide feedback on it, along with the Holoscape install process and provide feedback on that. She also wanted me to offer "suggestions/advice for us to bootstrap a developer/contributors community where people contribute to core code, projects, and documentation." This should have been a red flag as this is asking candidates to do real work for the company, but not get paid for it. In my case, I answered all these questions, even reporting a bug in their install docs that was raised to their core devs. Shortly thereafter, I got a follow-up email asking an ADDITIONAL ELEVEN questions. These asked for further feedback on their docs. I was now clearly doing the work a consultant would be paid for, but I had just started the application process which jives with reports I've since heard from others who had applied for jobs in both their engineering and marketing departments. At this point, I was asked in for a round of meetings. These included hour-long Zoom conferences, and once again the questions focused extremely heavily on what Holo should be doing to improve its existing community and materials. I must have been doing well because I kept getting called back for interviews. They also *recorded* these interviews "to share with the rest of the team." In retrospect, this was like a scene right out of Silicon Valley where engineers from a competing company present a ruse to get their hands on the tech from the protagonists. Over the course of the next 2 months, I spent almost 6 full hours in meetings with various members of the Holo team, including their engineers and their community engagement team and others. My interviews with one particular engineer was particularly interesting because I actually enjoyed speaking with him. He was candid and refreshing. He even apologized to me for the interview process taking so long. He also went out of his way to describe the company as, and I quote, "a mess" (his words!) and how he had confided in his partner a week before our vidchat that he was considering leaving the company out of frustration. He also said he thought it was "stupid and ridiculous" that Holo didn't have a diversity officer, and he told me that he stays with the company because, as a self-described "non-technical person," of how much money he makes there. I left my interviews with him feeling optimistic. After all of this, however, I heard nothing. Radio silence for two weeks. When I followed up with the hiring manager, she informed me that the position to which I applied no longer existed! I was angry and worn out, so I started asking around, which is when I learned that this kind of thing has happened with Holo numerous times before. After I followed up a second time asking for more information on what happened, the hiring manager replied and told me that everyone was extremely impressed with my performance throughout the interview process and that everyone had reported that all of my input was really valuable. She even said she'd keep me in mind for future positions. Bear in mind, there *are* other positions currently open at the company, including a QA Engineer and a DevOps engineer, both of which I am very qualified for. However, I have not heard anything about these positions at all. After I learned that getting jerked around by this company was a *normal* experience, i.e., that several other people in my network told me that they had similar experiences over the last year while applying to Holo, I understood enough to see what a sucker I had been. So, I sent Holo an invoice for my time. This company is using interviews to solicit real work without paying their laborers. That's something that is in direct opposition to their stated goal of bringing about a "more human Internet." Other applicants should be extremely wary of this company.
