      Entretien

Met company at job fair. Invited back for "Final Friday" at GM Renaissance Center in Detroit, MI. The company flew candidates in on Thursday afternoon and gave them a room at the hotel in the Renaissance Center. Thursday evening was a reception with finger foods and beer and wine. It was an opportunity to meet the interviewers, but candidates were not told who their interviewers were. The full day of interviews was on Friday and started at 6:50 a.m. It began with a breakfast where candidates sat at tables with interviewers (again, no one knew who the interviewers were). They broke candidates out in sessions for three 45 minute interviews. Each panel of interviews consisted of 2 interviewers. Every panel asked basically the same behavioral questions - some variation of how you've handled a stressful situation in the past or how you've dealt with coworkers who had different opinions of how to get the job done. They also asked which line of business you were interested in working. After the interviews, they held lunch where there was more networking with interviewers and current employees. After lunch there was a case analysis for about an hour. The case was a 3/4 page synopsis asking you to advise on how they should spend a given amount of funds (invest in R&D, pay back government debt, use it for marketing, etc). There was no correct answer although it seemed pretty straight forward that the money should go to R&D. Basically they were looking for whether you could write and present a case, even if your reasoning was based on little information. After that, there was a tour of OnStar and the Renaissance Center. The day ended around 4 p.m. You can tell that the employees were generally happy with their jobs and that the position paid well. Most people lived outside of the Downtown Detroit area. It seems to be a very congenial atmosphere and a great work/life balance since the day ends promptly at 5:30 and the lights go out at 6:30. They have tons of vacation and paid time off. The pay and benefits are excellent for the area. Advice: Know the company's hot products and current challenges. They tend to like people who are very knowledgeable and ask EDUCATED questions. Also, make sure that you know how to answer behavioral questions. There may be one or two technical questions where you have to walk them through a financial statement, but it's not very difficult at all.
