I was contacted by hiring manager for an initial screen on zoom for 30 minutes. I applied through the portal without any referral. The conversation with the hiring manager was around the kind of work I have done.

Tell me about your experience with a technology mentioned in the job description
Referred by my friend and received interview invites within three days. First-round general resume questions, including explaining current job duties and the reason for applying for this position at Genentech. Ask me to email previous code samples.
Spoke to two researchers in the early drug discovery team. Quizzed me on some statistics questions, and then asked me about my research experience. Really not bad at all, would have been great if I got the job.
