      Entretien

If selected for interview, you are asked to sit a test. This is challenging, but if you do the prep they send (i.e., a past exam that they make available on their webpage) and find some similar questions, then passing is very do-able. If you pass, then they spring a surprise interview on you immediately - this is in spite of the fact that they have clearly only invited you for the test on that day. Opinions may vary on the wisdom of doing this, but it is certainly necessary to be prepared for this. The major problem is that this surprise interview is a single interview with only one person - after which they may reject you, even if you've passed the test. This clearly is at odds with the accepted method of being interviewed by at least two people (together or individually) so that they can form an objective judgement. If, as I did, you get a rather odd interviewer who makes his questions almost incomprehensible, and are thus rejected you have no recourse for action. For this reason I would strongly recommend not applying to G-research. There system does not meet the expected standards of a modern and objective selection method. Nonetheless, by posting this I hope to share this so that if you do go ahead, and do the considerable amount of prep they expect, then you know what you are letting yourself in for.

Thank you for your feedback. I wanted to take the time to clarify a couple of points that you raise. We are always on the look-out for the best talent globally to hire in to our Quantitative Research teams and we work closely with PhDs and Post-Doctoral researchers in mathematics, physics & other numerate disciplines all year round. We therefore have standardised materials we provide all candidates with to guide their preparation and to explain our interview process. These do state that you will meet someone for an interview after your test should you be happy doing so. Most people we interview have taken time out to meet us and - based on the feedback we have received - we have designed our assessment to ensure candidates get to meet a Researcher the first time they come to meet us. I'm sorry if this wasn't made clear; we'll ensure we accentuate this on our materials. Regarding selection methods, we have been hiring Quants out of academia for many years and have found that exploring problems one-on-one is the best method for evaluating candidates . This is also the method adopted by most of our competitors. If there is any ambiguity from the first assessment, we will arrange a subsequent interview for a second assessment, however in your case there was a disparity between what we were looking for and your skill-set. This was communicated in the feedback we provided you following your interview. I hope this clears up some of your concerns and thank you again for interviewing with us. Kind regards. The G-Research Recruitment Team.
