      Candidature

J'ai postulé en ligne. J'ai passé un entretien chez Fetch (Chicago, IL) en mai 2021

      Entretien

I applied online to Fetch and about a week later was sent a take home test to do. I was surprised there was no phone screen, but I understand places do a little test at the beginning sometimes to weed out people that are not truly interested. However, this was definitely not a “little test.” This was 4 questions that took actually quite some time to do. The first one they had I felt was very questionable to have for a data analyst job and was about data modeling. They wanted you to develop from scratch, based on some data they gave you, a whole simplified, structured, relational diagram of their data with how you would model the data in a data warehouse, creating a diagram of everything and labeling it. This, to my knowledge, and years of data analysis, is not something a data analyst actually does. This is DBA work. I completely understand how relational databases work, but my job is not to design the database, so this seemed very questionable and is an entirely different profession that deals with this. After that was some general querying questions and how you would present some things, but also a data cleaning question (which actually *is* something you do on the job), but I gotta say, it was extremely difficult and way more than any data cleaning I’ve had to do irl or in other interviews. It seemed more at the level of something data science would do. Which, again, different profession. I spent hours on these projects across a couple days, at some point wondering like, wait, why am I doing this, I haven’t even had a phone screen yet. I eventually submitted and a week and a half later was told I was not selected, which I wasn’t surprised about. I feel like this is a wholly unfair process to candidates to make them put in this much effort, when they hadn’t even talked to someone yet, that requires this much time and energy. I’m sure it saves Fetch some time, but leaves a bad taste in my mouth about how they treat candidates, as well as the questions being non-data analyst questions as well.
