1 hr phone screen. Phone screen with recruiter was very professional and enjoyable. Technical interview compromised primarily of a 90 minute coding test was juvenile for the industry. Very poor communication. Extremely high expectations for the output of a 90 minute code test. Good luck finding someone that can meet your lofty expectations. Here is the sense I got from ExakTime's culture based on the technical interview: - They probably won't clearly communicate expectations to you and expect you to read their mind, a classic recipe for a very high stress environment. - They will expect a level of speed and perfection that is beyond unreasonable

ExakTime focuses on work-life balance and a great team environment. The code test used is designed to provide insight into how the candidate handles architecting new code. The code is check for code structure, work prioritization, and object-oriented practices. The test is reviewed for quality, not quantity. It is an elegantly approachable test designed to have the necessary challenges for review in a 90 minute period. The candidate is given unlimited access to the tester for questions and is asked to explain the approach to the test; and what would have been done to complete the test if there is more work remaining at the end of the test.

Applied via a recruiter. Don't even get me started on the recruiter they used. Horrid experience. These guys really need to change their recruiting company. Horrible experience with them. Initial interview was to write some code based on some car parking application. Nothing fancy, but I got the impression they wanted to see how I would architecture new code. You'll be surprised at how many developers cannot write an application from scratch. Got through that test and was asked for a second interview. They arranged that I speak to 8 people on the phone in the span of 1.5 hours (4 individual interviews). Trying to get so many people to interview you in such a short time, doesn't really leave much room for your questions. I never really got the chance to ask as many questions as I would of liked. Don't get me wrong, their staff were very professional and pleasant to talk to. Shame I cannot say the same about the recruiting company they used. Most of the development folks that work here, work from home. How do I put this politely? If you work from home, you are expected to have your webcam on for the duration of your work day (everyone can see everything around you). They put it down to being more team collaborative, but I put it down to someone being insecure or having control issues. Some of the people I spoke to had some kind of filter to blur out their surroundings. Why do these guys need to see me all day long? My home office is in my living room and I have family around me all the time. I really looked on this as an invasion of privacy. If these guys cannot trust their staff to work during the day at home, then don't have working from home as an option. This was my deciding factor as to not continue my application with this company any further. It just grossed my family out. I told the recruiting company I had no intentions of moving forward. But I found the recruiting company to be very unprofessional. I won't be working with them anymore.

Thank you for your helpful response. We want you to know we have taken action based on your concerns. First, we are sorry you did not have a good experience with one of our recruiting partners, we are touching base with all the recruiters we work with to make sure they are giving candidates the best experience. Next, we have taken into account your comments on the length of our interviews, and we now will only be having two team pairing interviews and one individual interview going forward. Lastly, our work from home policies was updated a while ago and no longer required the webcams on all day. Webcams are only required to be on when speaking or during meetings, not the entire day.

A brief phone screen was the initial step. An email was sent few hours prior to the first call to review a one page problem description. The depth and nuance of my initial questions regarding the test were received with a bit of shock. Obviously they were not used to such a professional level of analysis and detail. I began by setting up a unit test project, writing test scenarios in comments; the interviewer stopped me as he was not well versed in test-driven development and felt that I wouldn't have time to finish the exercise. The example was overly complex in order to test understanding of simple structures. A three panel Skype panel interview was next. Sadly, most of the participants were not using their webcams though I was required to use mine. This was a strike against their "connected" remote approach. The first segment was a traditional resume and knowledge review. The second two segments were described as "pair programming" but were really traditional coding tests. The position was for the Product Support group, cleaning up the issues from the traditional development group. Their approach to reducing defects was adding a "warranty period" where the traditional development group had to attempt to correct deficiencies before passing them off to the support group; output was more important than outcomes and quality. The most advanced technical practices, though details were not shared, would be feature flagging. They claimed to be using "agile methods" but that appears to not be the case. The process described was certainly not Scrum, though could have had Kanban (manufacturing) influences, based on the segregation of skills, roles, and responsibilities.
