      Entretien pour Software Engineer

      Entretien

I initially had a very positive outlook on my future with EventMobi. I received an offer of employment and was actually very excited about the opportunity. They only offered me 2 weeks of vacation + 5 sick days and I requested this get bumped to 3 weeks + 5 sick days. Honestly, I would have accepted the offer even if they said no. However, my request prompted a 4 paragraph response from the CTO explaining why he cannot approve my request for extra vacation days. As cited, he explained: -- We don't encourage our people to work overtime, and your current company offers unlimited vacation because they want you to work crazy hours (which was not true, the company I worked for at the time did offer unlimited vacation but also discouraged people from staying past 5) -- If I wanted to reach the next pinnacle of my career, shouldn't I want to spend more time at work? Since you want to advance your career, you should want to work as much as possible and 3 weeks + 5 sick days is too much time to take off if you really want to distinguish yourself professionally. -- We actually bumped our sick days to 8 days instead of 5, so if you stay healthy, you can take those as vacation days instead, so that brings total vacation days to 18 days. This long response is what ultimately prompted me to decline the offer. If he had just said no, they could not accomodate my request, I would have accepted. However, his explanation did not align with my core beliefs: Vacation days and sick days are not interchangeable. You cannot call 2 weeks + 5 sick days to be the equivalent of 3 weeks vacation and then claim to be matching the industry standard. My desire to have 3 weeks of vacation does not reflect a poor dedication to my career. There are 52 weeks in a year, most of them are spent at work, 3 weeks vacation cannot and should not affect my career advancement in any way. Incorrect assumptions about WHY my current employer offers unlimited vacations makes EventMobi look petty.

The interview process was smooth but a bit inconclusive in my opinion. I was asked questions about my experience with software technologies and principles. And then a take-home interview. But the reason for not been accepted was quite inconclusive as I was told the rejection wasn't due to my performance in the interview.I presume it was due to reasons like timezone or location. Asides this, the interview process was not unnecessarily stressful. It was smooth and considerate.

Interview Process was a coding assessment. During interview you are required to make changes to the code to improve it. Overall not too difficult. Also asked general questions about coding structure, good practices, and python specific questions.

First, I had phone interview. The interviewer was a senior software engineer, he gave me background on the company and asked me about my background, then he asked me simple technical questions like what it difference between GET and POST requests and what is your favourite SQL join. After two days, I got an email for in person interview from HR. I was interviewed by three different developers and I had lunch with a team of developers. In the first interview, the developer asked me to do TDD codekata from a website using Javascript. The exercise was fairly easy. The second interview, I was asked to explain architecture of something that I have designed before and then some general programming question such as what is the difference of different programming languages. In the last interview, I was asked to design software for a vending machine and after that the interviewer asked me some question about design patterns. The whole interview was rather easy. The interesting point was that the interviewers didn't know for what position they are interviewing me. Three days after this interview, they asked me to come in for the final interview. I was interviewed by the CTO and senior software engineer. They asked my questions like "what do you like to do?", "how do you resolve your problems with colleagues?", "where do you see yourself in five years?". At the end of interview, they told me that they will inform me about the decision in a day or two and asked me if I have another offer which I said no and asked me if they give me an offer how long does it take for me to answer that offer. After three days from interview, I send an email to the HR person to follow up on the result. The HR person did not answer me. After a week from interview, I received an email from CTO in which he apologized for the delay and informed me that they decided not to move forward with my application. The CTO mentioned that the reason that they did not go ahead with my application is that I have not work in large teams developing SaaS. This is also interesting because they basically should have known that reading my resume in the first place.
