The interview process at Deel was chaotic and stressful. The first step was a brief conversation with the Director of Design, where I immediately felt pressure to demonstrate my "hard work" ethic. The second step was a portfolio review, which was the most challenging aspect of the process. The company initially advertised for a Product Designer role, but during the review, the interviewer focused heavily on my UI choices, which was a red flag for me as it indicated that the company may not fully understand the difference between a Product Designer and a UI Designer. Furthermore, I felt constantly interrupted during the review, which made it difficult for me to effectively showcase my work. While I understand that the company may want to test how candidates handle pressure, I believe the bar was set too high for a Middle Level position. Additionally, I felt that the company placed a strong emphasis on whether or not I had worked at a major startup, and that this was a significant factor in their hiring decisions. Overall, this experience made me feel that Deel is looking for candidates who can deliver fast UI and are willing to work more hours than agreed upon. During the interview, I felt like I was begging for the opportunity to work there, rather than selling my qualifications.
