You are typically hired through a staffing agency. You take a personality test which is pretty easy to pass. Then you're hired. They set up a time for you to meet with the American Axle & Manufacturing HR manager on-site, where you view a slide-show about the company and then you spend an hour or so working to give you a general idea of what it's like. You are asked to make an assessment, and if you want the job, they give it to you.
