The process was simple. I applied as a sophomore in college and was initially declined. I applied again through the online application this year with more experience under my belt. I was contacted a week or two later via e-mail by the head of the department and we scheduled a phone interview. From what I know, I was not referred by anyone and did not know anyone who works/worked there personally. The interview was more like a description of what the internship would entail for me. I had basically already gotten the internship before the phone interview.
