J'ai passé un entretien chez Chanel (Singapour)

      Entretien

Applied for the role with Fondation Chanel's Asia team, went through 3 rounds of interviews (2 virtual and 1 in-person, with hiring manager + global team colleague; HR; and a so-called "informal chat" with two potential direct team members at their office in Singapore). I also completed an online culture assessment tool for HR purposes. Was told there would be a 4th round with Global Head, but did not make the cut into 4th and final round although I felt the conversations I had went well (I had good feedback from all throughout the process). During the interview process, the hiring manager emailed me right after the first round to ask to meet for an informal chat at her office the same week. I was still based abroad and had to reschedule with the hiring manager to do an in-person catch uo the following week (little did she know that I actually took the effort to fly back just for this meeting), and she was ok with that but essentially cancelled my meeting and asked her staff to take the meeting with me the following week. I found this quite a peculiar move, because she said it wasn't part of the formal interview, but since I felt that it was a good sign that she was inviting me to their office, I booked my trip to return to Singapore (I have been based abroad recently). The two things that should have stuck out to me more as a red flag with Chanel in what was overall a very agonizing interview process was the fact that: 1) HR tried to call for an interview with them by texting me at 11pm local time for an interview the next afternoon, knowing that I was abroad then (thankfully, I was awake at 2am my time to respond straightaway to find a good time to meet virtually); and 2) that HR was not listening to me at the end of my interview with her (she was chasing me to finish the culture assessment tool by end of business day, but I had already finished it when her junior team member sent it out to me the previous week, and I told her twice on the call that I had already completed it within the same day it was sent to me). After all this effort I put in and giving them the time to respond to me (they shared the expected timeline for recruiting for the role), I was ghosted for a few weeks even though I wrote in to HR and hiring manager to ask for updates and feedback. After weeks of feeling disrespected as a candidate who took Chanel seriously and expected some kind of feedback (having followed up twice), the hiring manager decides to send me a one sentence email saying "Thanks for following up, we decided to go with another candidate" - no apology, no proper feedback, which was utterly disappointing given how I felt led on by the whole process and also trusted Chanel to be a company with more respect for their potential employees (which was one of the main draws for me in trying for this role). It was even more disappointing for me because I am a social impact professional, and I work for the mission and vision of social purpose organisations. Enter my application to Fondation Chanel, which aims to empower women and girls, thinking they held so much promise...but no. I felt like the way they treated me was definitely not respectful or empowering, so what more the purpose of the philanthropic work they intend to do? It left a very bad taste in my mouth of a global brand and company I respected. I know that recruiting is a long process, and it is tough for both recruiters and potential candidates, and no is an answer we have to accept...but the HR and hiring manager did not have to make the process even more agonizing by giving false hope and ghosting me for weeks when a simple update was all that they needed to provide in quick time. Even the way they updated at the end for a late-stage candidate like me was very lackluster, with zero feedback given when I asked for it. I definitely expected more from a reputable organisation like Chanel, but I guess it's a painful way for me to discover that not all that glitters is gold. Let my review be a cautionary tale to all who want to take Chanel seriously as a potential employer, and to temper your expectations greatly in the interview process (even if they say you're in good standing). I have my doubts about the culture when they do not respect time and effort or see candidates as people who have chosen to foolishly prioritize them (I flew back and stuck around in the country in vain). I felt very drained by the whole experience, and I would not wish for anyone to go through what I did here.

      Questions d'entretien [1]

      Question 1

I was given a case study in the first round of virtual interviews on the spot, about how I'd approach a grantee application. All three rounds of interviews involved more culture fit type questions and getting to know you and your experiences in relation to the job.
