I was disappointed with my recent interview experience. The hiring manager was not present, and instead, I was interviewed by three engineers. Unfortunately, they seemed unprepared for conducting interviews and focused more on showcasing their own expertise rather than evaluating my fit for the role. The questions covered a wide range of technical topics, seemingly expecting me to have deep knowledge in all their respective fields, which did not feel realistic or relevant to the position.
Additionally, one interviewer came across as particularly self-absorbed, which impacted the overall dynamic of the interview.
Given the advancements in AI and modern recruitment practices, I found it outdated to be asked to recite Python code and SQL queries from memory. In 2025, I would expect a more holistic and skills-based approach rather than rote technical questioning.
Overall, the process did not meet my expectations, especially considering the time and preparation invested on my part. I hope Westlake can improve by:
Ensuring the hiring manager is present or, if unavailable, that the panel is briefed and prepared to conduct a structured interview.
Focusing on relevant, role-specific questions and skills assessments rather than broad or redundant technical trivia.
Respecting the candidate’s time and providing a professional, engaging experience.
In the age of AI, to be making someone reciting python code and SQL queries is ridiculous.
It is not 2005, it is 2025.
Wake up!
