Applied online and was contacted by HR within a few days. Initial interview with HR contact, and a technical interview a few days later. Technical interviewer was a member of the data science team.

Interview process involved a phone screen, an 8 hour coding challenge (not a typo) and a google hangouts (video chat) presentation. I was also told there was another in person interview (I am glad I did not make it that far). The initial interviewer for the phone screen was very nice, open and honest about the process. I was sent a coding challenge within a few hours. Realistically it took ~10 hours, because I really took the time to cleanup, comment and double check my code. The challenge was indicative of the daily duties, which is running linear regression. I was sent an invitation for video chat interview a few days later. During the video chat, there were three interviewers (One was really cool, one was silent, the other was neither). During the video chat I received zero feedback, zero insight to the company, and honestly zero desire to be a part of the team. Honestly the interviewers did not seem like they wanted to be there and it felt like the interviewers wanted the challenge completed in a particular manner, which could not be known with such an ambiguously worded challenge. An interview is a two way process, but this process felt like a one-way street (that leads to a dead end). The most frustrating part of the process was being promised feedback more than a week later, which was not given even with a generous buffer period. If a candidate takes time to complete an "8 hour" coding challenge and prepare a presentation; the least you can do is inform them your hiring decision. Not following up with a candidate after they invest that much time shows a lack of organization, respect for candidates, and excellent glimpse of how an employee would be treated. The moral of the story is if a company requires an "8 hour" data science coding challenge and that company is not revolutionizing the field ( or != Facebook, Amazon, Google, Apple), it is not worth your time.

Basic Statistics questions. If you have any formal statistical education its not too bad.

      1. A data scientist gave a pre-screening call. 2. Send you a data challenge. They told you it takes ~4 hours. It actually took me ~100 hours. Perhaps you'll need less if you're more experienced. It is worth the time since this determines the onsite interview. 3. Onsite. A presentation about the data challenge. All data scientists in BL gathered in a small room. I was a bit surprised that they don't have a big enough conference room for presentation. Everyone tried to be mean to you and ask difficult questions on purpose. During this process, I didn't feel respected actually. I kept hearing laughters. The intentional hard questions sometimes expose their ignorance about certain issues. I can accept polite doubts. But their questions are more like attack. The presentation is overall a very big turn-off for me. After the presentation, there were a few rounds of interviews by pairs of DS. Overall, I don't like their interview style especially the way they attacked me during presentation. Their work are all based on classical statistics. They like GLMs due to its well interpretability. It's a bit boring to me as it's too old fashioned. If you're a hardcore statistical guy, this position is a good fit for you.

      Question 1

The questions were only classical statistics, like t-test, linear programming, SQL and brain teasers. All questions are basic. And of course some behavior questions.

Hello, We regret that your experience interviewing with BlackLocus was not positive, and sorry that we did not do more to make you feel welcome and comfortable during your time with us. Thank you for your candid feedback - we will take your points to heart and use the feedback to improve our hiring process. An important part of the interview process is to ask many questions in order to gauge how a candidate thinks and how they respond to feedback. The questions can be difficult to answer, but were intended to be fair in the context of the conversation. If you felt attacked, then we certainly did something very wrong and hope you will accept our very sincere apology. We thank you for the opportunity to meet with you and wish you the best in your job search. Sincerely, Sarah Cox and the Data Science Team
