      Candidature

J'ai postulé en ligne. Le processus a pris 4 semaines. J'ai passé un entretien chez Baylis Medical Company (Mississauga, ON) en févr. 2018

      Entretien

My hiring process consisted of 3 interviews. One with a Staff Engineer and the second and third were with the respective directors. They had given a technical take home question. Mine involved providing a design of a circuit to measure a patient's ECG.

J'ai postulé via un établissement d'enseignement supérieur ou universitaire. Le processus a pris 1 semaine. J'ai passé un entretien chez Baylis Medical Company en déc. 2017

The interview process began with an HR screen. She asked me a few casual questions about my experience and skills. She also asked for my expected starting salary range and seemed quite taken aback when I said $75,000-$80,000 depending on PTO and benefits. Shortly after this interview, I interviewed in person with an engineer. I was suprised at how easy this interview was. There were no questions about experimental design or research. The interviewer just asked me a few questions about my resume and I told a lot of stories about past work experiences. After this interview, I was given a design challenge. The problem was very straightforward, but also severely underspecified. I asked more than ten clarifying questions in the interview and spent about two hours completing the problem at home. I answered the problem using a small design document and an analog circuit schematic. It really wasn't clear what they wanted, but they seemed happy with my response. After this I was brought in for another interview with the team manager that I would be working under. This interview was also mainly non-technical and was fairly casual. During this interview, the managers were very honest and candid about the pros and cons of the job. It became obvious to me early in the interview that this job wasn't a good fit for someone with my skillset and interests. The employees in the second interview made Baylis seem like a depressing place to work. They were working on a reasonably interesting product, but not a none of them were enthusiastic when they were telling me about it. One of them openly complained that the company Christmas party is mandatory, which seems like a really backwards and punitive policy to me. I don't think that very many young people would want to work in such a place. After this interview, I recieved a job offer almost immediately, for a lot less less money than my stated salary range.

First had an interview with the head of HR asking generic questions like why I want the position etc. The HR guy told me we are going to move forward with a second interview which will happen later on in the afternoon if I had time. I said sure and sure enough I interviewed with an engineer at the company. He asked me more technical questions and gave me a take-home design project to assess my engineer horsepower. At this point, I was not sure if they were simply using me to get new ideas for this unsolved issue or if they genuinely wanted to see my engineering horse power. There was a 24hr limit on the project. I did it, reluctantly and submitted to the engineer the next day. HR responded about a week later saying they wanted to have a third interview. I went into this interview and a new engineer who was now interviewing me hadn't even read my design project. I was answering his questions but from the beginning he kept staring into space behind me not looking like he even wanted to be there. He said they share the interviewing responsibilities, so I'm assuming in a sense he was forced to be there. At this point, the original engineer walked in who did read my project and I went through it with the both of them. They picked my brain and roasted me on the design. The uninterested engineer left saying he had some other business while the original engineer kept asking some more questions about my resume. Then he said that he has no more questions and they'd let me know of their decision. I got an email a few weeks later saying they decided not to offer me anything. I was really confused considering I though I did really well, in answering their questions and showing in-depth knowledge in the field. I figured they hired someone else but after they posted another ad for the same position a few days later, I grew more convinced that they are just stealing ideas from eager engineers trying to get a position in their company.
