      Entretien

      I applied through Backstop's website in late November on a Saturday. The following Monday, I discussed my application with a colleague who works in their Chicago office. The same day, I received an email from HR asking for a short phone screen. The HR recruiter was very friendly, and really made an effort to seem like she was a friend and advocate for me more than just a recruiter. The phone screen went very well and she passed my information on to the Vice President in charge of that department. The next day (Tuesday), I had an interview over the phone with the VP. He was also very friendly and very interested in everything I talked about. The conversation was laid back and he was very easy to talk to. He gave really good information about the position and what it would be like to work at Backstop. I was driving home to visit family over Thanksgiving the next day (Wednesday), and happened to be driving past Chicago, so Backstop asked if I was available to stop in to their offices downtown for another (!) interview, this time face to face. I met with the manager of the project management department. Another friendly interview, fun and engaging. We discussed several aspects of the position, as well as some positive impacts that I would bring to the table. After a couple days, I heard back from Backstop again, this time asking for another interview that next Monday in Chicago on my way back from visiting family. Imagine four interviews in as many business days, while driving 10-ish hours to visit family. It was a whirlwind. And the interview that Monday was the hardest part. The first part was to give a 30-minute presentation. I had a person in the office with me (the aforementioned VP), and another on the phone from New York. The presentation went well - it was on a topic that I was already familiar with. It ran a little long and I probably could have shortened a few parts. The second part is probably the toughest. It requires solving logic problems. Two interviewers from New York asked various questions. Some were very easy, others not so much. But the answers totally made sense once you came to your conclusions. The major purpose was to determine how well you can think through a problem. The last part is just a "get to know you" discussion, looking to see how well you would fit into the culture and the environment. Everyone was really nice and had good answers to questions that I asked. Unfortunately, at the end of all of this, I did not receive an offer. It was stated that they were looking for someone with better implementation experience at that time than what I could offer. I did have my strengths - already familiar with the software (we use it in my current work), implementation from our own experience, and instruction capabilities. I remain hopeful that at some time in the future, I can bring these again to the table and possibly find myself in a position to interview again with Backstop. I can definitely say that if Backstop were to call me (or I called them) and they had a position for me - I wouldn't hesitate. Everyone I met was incredibly friendly, and even being my interviewers, really seemed like they wanted me as part of their team. Despite any potential negatives posted in reviews, or otherwise, this would be a great place to work.

      I had a phone interview with a lady from HR . Before the interview, I prepared my answers, and did some research about the company and I was all ready, very enthusiastic and excited about the role until the first minute of the interview. HR person has a big role on the phone interview. It is their job to give candidates the right environment to let them show their real potential. This employee sounded really bored and not really focused, and sounded like why she was even wasting time to talk to me. Didn’t ask to walk through the resume, asked directly what are the similarities between this role and my only related past experiences. I couldn’t express myself as I would be in person since I had this negative energy over the phone. As I was replying, she sounded bored. And then a big silence. The questions she asked wasn’t super clear and I had to ask to explain it more. Unless it’s not a stress interview, It’s not right to give hard times to the candidate. It’s HR person job to treat every candidate equally and with the same respect. Later on, she openly told me that she wouldn’t consider my resume for this role, had one of their employee did not pass my resume to her. She basically tried to tell me, you’re not a good fit. You don’t have to do phone screen if you don’t think that resume doesn’t look like a good fit. Wasting time for both sides. I was really affected by her energy and couldn’t do a good job answering the questions, even though I am a confident person, I lost it and acted goofy. I think the company should really question their HR department’s functionality and teach them how to treat candidates. I believe that HR department is the mirror of an organization, they have to represent the whole company. Then I had another phone screen with the hiring manager which was totally fine. The person was sincere and it was more like a conversation. Although he didnt even ask me question, just wanted to hear from what I had to say. Then I couldn't have an opportunity for a face to face interview.

The goal of the phone interview is to determine whether there is a mutual fit at a high level, and sometimes it is difficult to read the other person without the benefit of visual confirmation of the candidate's confusion. Pauses on the recruiter’s end may be to take notes or to gather thoughts, and it’s unfortunate they were interpreted otherwise. We definitely look to match similarities between what a candidate has done before, taking into consideration skill sets and real time needs, and what we expect them do to here for success. However, determining cultural fit – whether a candidate can be additive to our company overall is really our first priority.
