      Entretien

In early 2020, I was in the process of interviewing for a Senior Product Manager position at Affirm. The recruiter I interacted with was quite amiable back then, and we conducted a preliminary screening. However, as the pandemic unfolded, I was informed that the company had decided to temporarily halt hiring for that particular role. While this was disappointing news, I fully understood the circumstances, as such measures were becoming widespread across the board. Affirm's team expressed their interest in staying in touch and indicated that they believed I would be a strong fit for the role (an assessment I shared). Eventually, I secured another job. But I truly thought the recruiter meant what she said about staying in touch! Fast forward to the present, I find myself seeking new opportunities, and that same recruiter remains at Affirm. I came across an open Senior Product Manager position that piqued my interest, prompting me to submit an application and attempt to reconnect with the recruiter. However, my initial emails to her went unanswered or ignored leaving me feeling frustrated and disappointed. After some persistence, I did receive a response, though regrettably, it was succinct and quickly conveyed that I was not considered a suitable fit for the role. It was upsetting that, at the very least, they did not opt to restart the process with an initial screening to gauge my current qualifications and suitability for the position. If anything I am now more qualified than I was 3.5 years ago! The reason for my decision to submit this review stems from my frustration with Affirm's recruiter. It appears that they offered assurances like "we'll stay in touch" without any intention of following through on those commitments.

The process began with a recruiter call, followed by a 30-minute hiring manager (HM) round, and then a mini onsite that covered 0→1 product design and execution skills. I personally found the process a bit unusual. Although I felt that I didn’t perform well in the HM round, I was still moved forward to onsite. My onsite, in contrast, felt very strong, but I was ultimately rejected.

      Question 1

Hiring Manager Round: Tell Me About Yourself (TMAY), How do you work with Sales and Business Development?, What’s a feature you’ve built in the past and how would you change it?, Walk me through a complex technical product you’ve built. Case Study (Mini Onsite) 0 → 1 Product Thinking: “Pick a favorite product and tell us how you’d improve it.” Execution: “If a key metric for a consumer app was declining, how would you diagnose and respond?”

They have a standard hiring process that is documented and sent to you when you interview. Applied through a referral. Recruiter > Hiring Manager > Mini Case Round (45 mins each on Product Sense & Product Execution) > Full loop interview (They call it virtual onsite where you meet different stake holders). I didn't clear the Mini Case Round. Hiring manager round was mostly behavioral with questions on "tell me about a time when.. " and expectation was to provide STAR format answers. Case Question 1 (Execution) : RCA type question where I was asked to diagnose fall in metric for an e-commerce business. The interviewer didn't give any other info and when I asked clarifying follow up questions, I was asked to assume and move on. I lost my confidence in this round. Case Question 2 (Product Sense) : What is your favorite product & how would you improve it? With couple of follow up questions. This round was normal. They really insist on customer empathy, tying back to business metrics. So prepare well here. The recruiter was very communicative and got back promptly after each round with status and guidance for the next round. Even when they decided to move on, the recruiter set up time to time to provide actionable feedback. Really appreciate this gesture when it has become a norm to ghost these days.
