Spoke with a employee higher up in the org about working there. Seems like a good company, but lack of communication left a really bad taste in my mouth. Was told they'd get back to me, but ended up being ghosted. I then let the owner know about my experience and then again never heard anything either. No "sorry about that, we dropped the ball," just radio silence. It's really the sort of behavior you'd expect to see at a large company, not a small custom dev shop.

The interview process was fairly standard. They asked about my software development experience and focused on specific technology stacks that they use, such as Laravel. They also asked questions about how rigid I would be on adapting coding standards and practices they deem to be how their company does things. Overall, a fairly standard interview process for software development. I didn't end up taking the job as they had some non-standard language in their contract. Note I am not a lawyer, and while I had issues with the language, I will leave it up to the reader to interpret the law for themselves. The contract had elements of the following: 1. There was a non-disparagement clause that stated that during and for 2 years following employment one could not publically say anything negative about the company, personnel, clients, or vendors. One may want to keep this in mind when reviewing information on GlassDoor about the company. 2. The 2-year non-solicit not only applied to past clients, potential clients, partners, and personnel but also to vendors. I, as a non-lawyer, interpreted this to mean that I could not use any vendor they do on another job. For instance, hypothetically, Cisco and vendor maintenance agreements. This is likely not what is meant by the contract, but it appears to be worded in this fashion. However, again I am not a lawyer. When I inquired about these elements they told me they were "standard legal" items and that they would not modify them for me. Additionally, they acted surprised and questioned why I would ask for modifications to a non-disparagement clause. As if it meant I was looking to disparage the company, just because I was uncomfortable with the clause. They also have a 3-month non-compete clause which limits working for "custom software" shops within 50 miles of their offices. This, however, is supplemented by the 2-year non-solicit which also applies limits on future work opportunities. I am not a lawyer, so you may want a lawyer to look over the language. I have tried to be as truthful, factual, and straightforward as I can be about the interview and the contract. It is not my intent to disparage ActiveLogic in any way, merely to let others know my experience. It is likely ActiveLogic will read this and respond. I hope they do so with a note that they have modified their contract to be less restrictive for the benefit of their employees. Or at the very least that they are happy this information is available for others to review.

As a small company, it's critical to maintain a positive reputation from both our clients and team members. We have always strived to be a place where our developers and staff would stay long-term. We provide in the top 3% of highest-paid salaries & benefits in our areas of business. Unfortunately, but realistically, not every person under our employment has had a positive experience, for whatever reason. People are people and each has different personal goals. I wish I could say that we are surprised this interviewee took to the internet to post about his interview, especially after they expressed rather deep concern regarding a reasonably standard employment agreement "non-disparagement" clause. One could have just moved on to the other "offers" instead of publicizing non-public information about Active Logic. We don't force anyone to sign our employment agreement and we've never heard a single complaint from the many employees we've had in our seven years, including over 10 Sr-level professionals we've hired over the last six months. Best wishes to this interviewee, but we made the right call when we retracted our offer. This wouldn't have ended well for either side.
