    Avantages

So far I have been very happy with Mercy Corps. The organization is very flexible and forward thinking (in terms of its policies and practices around flexible work location, etc.) and I find most everyone is genuine and open to new ideas. That said, I think the openess can be sometimes too open and I now find there is some catch up work in regards to the strategic aspect of this. This seems a bit chaotic in nature but I appreciate the fact that it is an organization that is thinking, talking and trying to challenge themselves. They are in a period of huge growth and are thinking about how to make this happen efficiently and effectively.

    Inconvénients

First, the organization consistently describes itself as "relationship-driven" and flat yet I don't get the impression that all employees have access to the people or even know who the key people are. I think MC should consider the messaging here. With exponential growth and a highly decentralized structure this may not, in fact, be the message to send. MC is working on this.

Second, growth is good but needs to be managed. I see a lot of efforts in this regard. The organization has recently restructured and is really thinking strategically around this growth. My role is a good example of this. A position that takes a very innovative approach to a traditional field. I appreciate this.

Third, I was told so many good things about this organization before joining and these things do hold true. I think our teams and our field work are our biggest assets but don't see us using them as such. I hope to see a bit shift in using this asset to communicate our work to people outside! We are not very well known for such a a large organization which is a pity.

    Conseils à la direction

Keep doing what you are doing! I have been very impressed with the honesty and direction of the senior leadership. Do keep an eye on the outside as many of you are long-term MC'ers. Always stay relevant. Revisit compensation. I don't think it is that competitive but maybe this is also a strategy (and it also depends on who you ask). Oh...change the name! I know this is easier said than done but I truly think our name is an impediment to our brand!

J'ai travaillé chez Mercy Corps en Contrat Permanent (Moins d'un an)

    Avantages

The operational staff working at this organization are a dedicated and motivated bunch which has made the work unique

    Inconvénients

(Senior) management lack skills to properly manage staff and steer/lead an organization. Work-floor lacks diversity (especially at the top) and lacks examples of good management practices.

Progression within this organization is arbitrary and based on favoritism rather than skill; so are management decisions. Talent isn't identified, nurtured or developed.

No proper procedures, focal points based on job title, or other internal policies are in place; it's about "knowing the right people to reach out to". This makes doing the work itself laborious. As a result, the organization is run unprofessionally, and meetings consist of people boasting about who they know, what they know, and how long they've spent working with the organization.

It's especially a difficult organization for people joining anew, as being successful within your job and within this organization is based on your internal network rather than skill, experience, or anything else really. Not a surprise that turnover is incredibly high, and people leaving have ushered the words to new folk to - and I quote - "get out as soon as you can".

    Conseils à la direction

Professionalize internally. Train management. Create career paths and training programs. Start representing staff and become attuned to their needs. Stop valuing time spent working with the organization and start nurturing talent. Become more diverse at the senior level and replace the old/colonial boys club at the top.

    Avantages

Brilliant work done all over the world, passionate people, and great family attitude.

    Inconvénients

Disorganised and no processes in place for a lot of thing. Also some management need more support/training. Career progression is very slow and very unclear.

    Conseils à la direction

Need to have better training in place for managers and less emphasis on travel for so-so reasons.

J'ai travaillé chez Mercy Corps en Contrat Permanent (Pendant plus de 3 ans)

    Avantages

Lots of new business and interesting work coming in all the time, so opportunities to gain exposure to new approaches and technical areas. Some fun people and a good team spirit both in HQ and field posts. Excellent internal systems/processes for program management and core technical approaches. Expat field postings have good benefits, especially for families with children. Solid communications and branding approach that is respectful of those we serve. Good amount of flexibility to try new things.

    Inconvénients

The company grew quickly and some senior management should have been replaced with more qualified industry veterans with experience at NGOs larger than Mercy Corps, rather than shuffling around people who'd been in the agency for 15+ years. The company lowballs its own staff on salaries- negotiate hard! HR was horrible during my time- unresponsive, inflexible, against its employees interests. Finally, I saw jobs at the mid level given to senior managers'/ HQ's/ board members' "favorites" rather than to the most qualified candidates. Really a shame to see the organization stoop to this level considering they are able to attract top talent.

    Conseils à la direction

Professionalize the senior management team to include more outsiders and fewer Mercy Corps "lifers" to diversify viewpoints and improve leadership quality, try not to make junior and mid-level staff so disposable. Continue with the flexibility field teams have to try new things.
