    A lot of micro-management, with managers almost "spying" on employees on the shop floor

    Avantages

    The people are the best you could work with

    So much information to hand

    Inconvénients

    Performance related increases are desperately needed, myself and others bleed orange and do far and above what is expected. There is no incentive for this.

    I work in HR
    I am the only one of my kind in the store, no-one else holds this position. I am skilled in many areas others are not, I am held accountable for the confidential information of all colleagues in-store, I am asked for advice numerous times a day by others more senior to me, I am asked how others more senior to me should be undertaking their job, I take on not only work that is not mine but work in other stores aswell, I am expected to be everything to everyone.......yet I am paid the same as the man who collects trollies or a brand new shop floor CA.
    I am not classed as an expert by those at the top yet I most certainly am by those I work with and support every day. Those who make the decisions at the top need to make a change quickly.
    B&Q are hemorrhaging HR colleagues, there will soon be no experience left as they are leaving for other companies who respect them for their knowledge and pay accordingly.

    We care about our colleagues and enjoy our work......we don't want to leave but you are forcing our hands.

    Due to a declining industry business model in the trade sector there are constraints on employees and managers. 19 20

    Module departments need revamping, instead of trying to predict the future try anticipating customer needs creating a more complete experience.

    Avantages

    Great job if your left to get on with it and like working outdoors in all weathers, as appropriate clothing is provided.

    Inconvénients

    Learn from mistakes by being disciplined or spoken to in a demeaning manner. Very inflexible with breaks. Bullying attitude from some managers who do not lead by example. Fails to follow up with rewards and recognition schemes. Very unreasonable at times and one way discussions. They have a poster in the staff room which says ‘if you don’t like it, get out’! Must be able to tolerate being shouted at, and that’s not by the customers. If you have a soft demeaner I would not recommend this place for you.

    Avantages

    Nice colleagues (some of the best ive worked with) decent work/life balance and great holidays

    Inconvénients

    Wages could be better. Management could be better and not so many. Also managers should treat employers better and not threaten to sack them when they make simple mistakes.

    Treat your staff better. Listen to your customers maybe.. They complain about things being damaged which I saw a lot of. You have the money to invest in better products so maybe it's worth doing.

    Avantages

    Plenty of opportunity to progress if you have tons of drive and inquisitiveness to source the information needed to fulfil the job role as you will not be spoon fed the details, just pointed in the general direction of where to gain the knowledge, thus proving your dedication and determination to the company and your future.

    Inconvénients

    You will be squeezed for every ounce of work the management feel they can get out of you until you submit to working for free in your own time after your shifts have ended, just so that you don't go home feeling deflated and worthless and that you have not accomplished every task that has been pushed your way to be completed in an unrealistic time frame. Over the years the staff level has depleted by half but the workload and dedication to giving excellent customer service has increased.

    Good luck with trying to keep the store running with the huge turn over of staff due to lack of respect and appreciation given to the colleagues for their hard work and for limiting pay to the minimum wage and the only stepping stone is to become management and work even longer hours. You can not expect excellent customer service with so few staff that the customers literally play "hunt the staff" to pass the time with the kids when in store.
