What do you think about pair programming?

I mentioned that while I understand industry experts like Dave Farley advocate for this style of working, I personally believe it can reduce productivity. In my previous job, we typically worked independently and only collaborated or paired when necessary to solve issues. I was informed that this response contributed to my rejection, alongside the fact that other candidates had experiences more closely aligned with the job specifications. I find the latter reason understandable. However, the first reason is somewhat perplexing. Before leaving the interview, I was asked if I was open to pairing, and I affirmed that I was. It seems unfair that my personal opinion on productivity, despite my willingness to adapt to the company's practices, was a factor in their decision.
