Typical behavioral questions with a code review.

During my last video interview, the call was clunky from the beginning. The typical small talk with one of the interviewers occurred albeit very brief and forced compared to previous calls with WellSky or with other interviews I’ve recently been a part of. Then the Architect joined late and immediately wanted to jump right into it by reviewing the interview process for this call. I found this impersonal and already felt like a burden on their time. Once the interview got going, we successfully discussed the typical behavioral questions then walked through my skills as well as management and leadership experiences. Then I was presented with a Java-like code review by one of the interviewers (Director), nice guy but he seemed “beat down” and quite during this video call. This exercise was a bit more challenging for me and I didn’t do my best. I wasn’t surprised by this, I haven’t been hands-on in many years and previously gave my teams autonomy with this aspect of our team with only high-level reviews on my part. Although I appreciate candor and feedback, the dry, impersonal, and blunt review by the Architect was not the proper way. This interaction led me rethink my previous wonderful experiences with WellSky. I’m sure he is an excellent Architect and these traits are an asset in some situations but during an interview with his delivery especially with no previous pleasantries felt more like belittling than constructive criticism. He spoke the truth from his perspective but him admitting to trying to intentionally “push my buttons“ (unsuccessfully) about being "too nice" and looking like a "deer in the headlights", (granted probably all true) still felt more insulting than anything constructive. My final thoughts; I appreciate all the time and effort all interviewers gave in this process but with this last call I have to think, is this the true culture and work environment at WellSky or just an anomaly? If this is typical there, are team standups, system design discussions, 1:1s, code reviews,... all dry and impersonal or a time to push buttons and belittle OR should these be a time to enjoy your work and peers while collaborating and provide constructive feedback? This last call would be something I would NOT tolerate on any of my teams. Interviewers are supposed to be representatives of the company and the company’s culture and work environment. I'm disappointed, the company and role had promise.
