A recruiter reached out to me after I submitted an online application. The recruiter gives off a very sales-y vibe but was overall a nice introduction to the company. The next step was a technical screen with an engineering manager where you’ll be pulling data from an API to create a modal of images. I tried my best to interact with the interviewer and he let me go down a HTML/CSS rabbit hole which ate away at the time. Definitely focus on the React side of things and brush up on hooks and basic array manipulation. The interviewer seemed very uninterested. He would mute himself and then look at another screen. If I got stuck, and even when I’d fully explain my steps, he’d be silent and I’d have to give him context to get ramped up. He’d have the context if he paid attention. It wasn’t a very interactive pairing session. This added to my nerves and made the experience uncomfortable and awkward. For a company that says they care about inclusion this interview sure felt like every other stuffy one I’ve had in the industry which is unfortunate as I was excited with the possibility for working at Transfix.
