Stage 1: What's the difference between dependence and correlation?

I said none, but the interviewer didn't like the answer. Now I think that they associate "correlation" with the Pearson correlation coefficient, which is invariant to *linear* transformations of variables. Hence they see it as different from dependence, which is not necessarily linear. I didn't expect putting things that way from a field operating on neural networks.
