How have you been sustaining yourself?

I was not at all upset by the way in which the interview was conducted nor by not receiving an offer. However, during the first interview the question of "how have you been sustaining yourself?" arose in response to the "gap" in my resumé due to a former layoff. Despite whatever the reason for a "gap" in a resumé, I thought this to be a completely unprofessional question and went against some of their very values they aimed to look for in their employees. I would not want to work with a team member who thinks such a question is acceptable to ask, and furthermore does not know someone's personal history.
