How do I handle problem students.

I said it varied depending on the problem. If the problem was tardiness with assignments I would send them a note and ask if they are aware of the late policy and give them a general idea of how many points they are losing in an entire semester because of the tardiness. If the student responds back, they will usually open up about extra stress they may be experiencing. I can then give them information on time management or student support services. If the student doesn't respond to my email message about their tardiness, then I will continue to assess the maximum late points or give them a zero. Usually the zero gets their attention and allows me to start a dialogue. If the problem student is a problem because they are disrespectful, I will call them on the telephone and express that their online behavior has me concerned. Usually in the online setting students who are rude or disrespectful are expecting a telephone call. In the digital age, an actual human voice telling you that your behavior is out of line is far more potent than an email.
