Avantages

I worked with Drew, Owner & President of D&A, for 4 years as one of his engineers when he was the CEO of App Partner. A couple years later, I am now working with him again as a part-time employee for D&A. When he approached me with an offer to be a part-time employee, I had some concerns about balancing this part-time work on top of my other full-time Android position, but ultimately decided to take the position for the reasons below: 1) Drew was great to work with during my 4 years at App Partner. Always available and approachable, he is competent and there to answer questions whenever needed. 2) I'm well compensated for my time. D&A is fully remote, so it has less overhead compared to traditional brick & mortar companies. The extra money can be used to increase wages for employees. 3) Being fully remote is a great perk. Drew offered completely flexible hours, so I'm able to work from home when my schedule allows, so long as work is getting done and I put in an agreed amount of time each week.

Inconvénients

There's been a sense of urgency for the first month and a half of work, as there's more work that needs to be done ASAP than there are engineers to do it. This is being addressed, which is great, D&A is hiring more engineers.

To speak to your constructive feedback, since this was written we have worked to expand our team from just a couple of in-house engineers to 7 in-house engineers while also continuing to leverage a network fo remote part-time engineers like yourself to help handle those unexpected work crunches! Most of our capabilities are now well staffed, but we know we have more work to do to always keep pace with the growth we're experiencing. It's a tough balancing act as you know, but we will continue to invest in recruiting and more importantly retaining a great team of engineers!

Some good coworkers, got to learn a lot here! Pay on time, though salaries were nothing special.

Inconvénients

Project assignments and mentorship fell along racial lines: people of color were consistently handed the most hidden, highest‑risk tasks with razor‑thin deadlines, while white staff received the new‑feature work and customer‑facing projects. Performance reviews felt biased and opaque - POC who produced results were always passed over for promotions in favor of less productive colleagues who matched the preferred profile. I was directly told to discard resumes with ethnic‑sounding names and to prioritize “the culture fit,” a thinly veiled excuse for excluding diverse applicants. Meetings frequently included casual racist remarks and negative assumptions about competence. The informal networks that drive advancement were closed to anyone outside the "inner circle". I left because I could not have a future at a company where discriminatory policies were treated as normal.
