Avantages
-Friendly atmosphere
-Open door policy
-Lunches are often provided
-Broad exposure to consulting
-Profit sharing
-Travel (if you like this, con if not)
-Benefits good (except 401k matching, see below)
-They are a market leader in a solid little niche
Inconvénients
-Software is built on a proprietary programming language (the owner of this company also owns the company that developed this programming language back in the 80s)
-As a result of the above, while you are gaining software development experience, you are not gaining it in any language that you can put on your resume without having to explain what it is. MAKE SURE you get into the New Products team unless you plan to have this job for the long haul
-Hesitant to make major changes to softwares and processes in order to stay modern
-Compensation can quickly fall below market value if you're not actively pushing for raises. They will counter this with the fact that they profit share, but this is no excuse for a below market base salary
-No 401k matching
-Some customers can be unnecessarily demanding, but most of them are chill
