Avantages

BioNTech could be an appealing place for a local or domestic workforce to work, as Mainz is widely regarded as one of the best cities in Germany. For expats, while Mainz is located in the greater Frankfurt area, where the English-speaking population is relatively big, so you won't feel completely isolated if you don't speak German. There are still opportunities to connect with others, especially given the international nature of the region.

Inconvénients

BioNTech currently lacks a clear long-term strategy, with its focus shifting primarily toward acquiring companies outside the EU, especially in China. This approach raises concerns about the lack of a cohesive vision for sustainable growth. The company's management structure is top-heavy, with an excessive number of VPs, Senior Directors, and Directors. This creates an "upside-down" pyramid that leads to inefficiencies, confusion, and decision-making bottlenecks. Middle management is caught in a constant state of urgency due to frequent and unpredictable tactical changes, creating a high-pressure environment and undermining long-term planning. Moreover, BioNTech is facing significant financial constraints, which hinder investment in critical areas such as updating outdated facilities and providing basic services for employees working from the office. This lack of resources could impact employee satisfaction and productivity, making it harder for the company to attract and retain talent. On top of that incredible bureaucracy and constant obstruction are the norm on a day-to-day basis, making it difficult to navigate and get things done efficiently. Remuneration at BioNTech is below the market standard and less competitive compared to other companies in the industry. Meaningful company benefits are typically reserved for senior roles, which are often occupied by long-tenured employees who joined during the company's peak success, largely driven by the COVID vaccine. The golden age is clearly over, and without significant changes and new product innovations, the company risks fading into the background. My advice before joining BioNTech: make sure you know exactly who you will be reporting to and conduct a thorough audit of the company beforehand. Without this, it could end up being a waste of time—and potentially money—especially if you're relocating from abroad. Personally, I am leaving as soon as possible due to the challenges and frustrations I've encountered.

Avantages

People here genuinely want to do the right thing and come up with new therapies for patients. The company does want to do what is right for its employees as changes are ongoing. Site leadership tends to try and shield the employees from the chaos at the global level and senior leadership, and there is good experience present at the lower levels of the company.

Inconvénients

Senior leadership is very inexperienced, especially when it comes to making decisions, and sticking with them. Priorities are constantly changing and it can be infuriating at times, especially when the same team members are working on the different projects at the same time with the same priorities. Some days it feels like management is a a dog chasing cars, and does not know what to do when it finally catches one. There used to be a great culture at sites in the US. The company has underwent multiple layoffs and site closures over the past year, so the culture here has been negatively affected by the constant barrage of negative news and constant changes. There is a concerted effort to prioritize the activities at the company for the future, but we will be going through a lot of growing pains as the company reorganizes. Ultimately there is a bright future in store.
